Bio

Jane Chin-A-Fo is a photographer based in The Hague, the Netherlands. Her work explores the relationship between place, memory, migration and belonging. Working at the intersection of art and documentary photography, she uses the camera as a way of investigating the emotional and psychological connections we form with the places we inhabit, leave behind and return to.

Her work often begins with personal experience, yet moves beyond autobiography. Through landscape, light and atmosphere, Chin-A-Fo explores what remains when memory becomes fragmented and how a sense of belonging can persist across time and distance. Her photographs are not intended simply to document a place, but to create space for recognition, ambiguity and emotional resonance.

Born in Suriname and having lived in the Netherlands since the age of nineteen, her own experience of migration forms an underlying presence in her practice. This can be seen in projects such as Another Place – A Sense of Belonging and Between Shores, in which questions of home, displacement and the distance between memory and reality come together.

Jane Chin-A-Fo graduated from the Fotoacademie in Amsterdam in 2024. She is an artist member of Pulchri Studio in The Hague and lives and works in The Hague, the Netherlands.
